Review - Eddie Trunk's Essential Guide To Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Volume 2 (Abrams Books)

I like Eddie, we recently had him on the show and he just came across as a nice guy who loves his metal. Some people though have a serious chip on their shoulder about the guy. They say he's opinionated, talks too much when he should be playing more tunes, tackles subjects like the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame when he has the forum to fry bigger fish, over promotes himself and the list goes on.

He has made a livelihood out of our genre of music, no easy feat I'm sure so I'm not going to pile on here like a lot of others. You don't like That Metal Show then fine just don't watch it. You try find Don Dokken or Michael Schenker on any other U.S based television show, best of luck with that one. He has musicians who want to appear on his radio show and hang around after promoting their stuff to talk metal because they like the guy. You don't like him then fine but he has earned respect. He knows his stuff and so it's no surprise that his first book was a success. So here's book number 2, same format, nice pictures, low purchase price.

Whether you actually get anything out of it will depend on how serious a metal fan you are. I've been into metal since the mid-eighties. I have heard of all the bands in the book, know their backgrounds and have many of their albums. If you listen to his radio shows then many of his personal stories interacting with the bands are also old news. If you are newish to metal or liked his first book then you will get more out of both volumes then me.

It's an easy read, features a lot of great bands and is done by someone who is genuinely passionate about metal and hard rock. So he over promotes himself sometimes. So what, he has a family to feed. Come on, admit it, deep down we are all a little jealous of what he has achieved.

Richie.
