American melodic speed / true heavy metal band VANLADE are currently writing for their upcoming new 3rd cd, recording a covers ep and a special Southern California festival appearance.

Vanlade vocalist Brett Blackout has checked in with the following comment:
"We have a lot of exciting things brewing in the Vanlade camp! While writing for album three is well underway, we first plan on releasing a six song cover EP later this year that will feature a few very special guests from the US heavy metal scene. We have decided to keep the details under wrap until further notice, but we will have the EP available this October for the incredible Frost and Fire festival that we are honored to be apart of. Keep up with us on Facebook for soon-to-come fall tour information, as well as recording updates! Until then: stay heavy or die!!!"

"Rage of The Gods" was expertly mastered by guitarist / producer Stu "The Hammer" Marshall (Death Dealer / Blasted to Static / Empires of Eden / Ex-Dungeon) at his Frontier Studio in Sydney, Australia, who also worked on the latest releases from Zephaniah - "Reforged", Corners of Sanctuary - "Metal Machine" and the upcoming new Eternal Voyager - "Darkened Times".

Swedish heavy metallers Trial sign worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records

Metal Blade Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Swedish heavy metallers Trial! Formed in 2007, Trial first wrote and recorded the Malicious Arts EP (2013), which became a stepping stone from where the band was to where they wanted to be. "That EP, in many ways, became our first road to liberate us from ourselves," Trial recalls. "Rising from the ashes of our former selves, we took things further beyond, which ultimately resulted in the album 'Vessel'."

After earning acclaimed reviews for Vessel (2015), Trial's popularity continued to grow, and it wasn't long before Metal Blade Records signed the band. With plans to re-invent themselves once again, Trial's upcoming debut for the label promises to be another step forward in their career.

Trial comments: "We're honoured to be able to work with such a prestigious and historically important label as Metal Blade. Many of their previous releases are milestones in the genre and of great inspiration to us. To join their roster of artists and be a part of that legacy is one step further towards the perfection of our craft!"

Trial line-up:
Linus Johansson - Vocals
Alexander Ellstrom - Guitars
Andreas Johnsson - Guitars
Andreas Olsson - Bass
Martin Svensson - Drums

The Tracy G Group- Tramp (The Spooky G Label)

Tracy G is a friend of the show and was an integral part of our multi-episode project on Dio's  Strange Highways album, a fantastic piece of work. Not everything he's done since has hit home with me in the same way though. I like some of Angry Machines and Goaded. The last release to pass through my ears was his Pain Savior Dead Weight On A Dying Planet in 2013, more a project then a real band. Like most projects now involved file sharing back and forth, if you listen deeply enough you can tell. The jamming was missing, something Tracy said was vital to the success of Strange Highways. He wanted a real band, in a room together, old school.

Tramp is the result and it's the best thing he's put his name to in years. On first listen the sheer heaviness of the music hits you. Opener The Revolution, Leech and Liar all feature bone crushing riffs and Bleed is probably the heaviest song you will hear all year. The band is killer too with Randy Oviedo on bass and Patrick Johansson on drums, listen to these guys groove on The California Country Jamboree Funkfest. Yet it's Michael Beatty's vocals that really floored me, a big man with an even bigger voice. With something to say too with song titles like Arrogant Prick and Liar. I wouldn't want to spill his pint.

The album is far from one dimensional though. Fireball is a good old time blues number and Brokenness also dials it down a notch or two. Some of the tracks remind me of Living Color circa the Stain album such as Evil Is Good. And that guitar tone, bloody hell how does he get it. Funnily enough it reminds me a little of Eddie Van Halen particularly in the beginning of Leech and Fireball. The album ends on a melancholy note with the restrained Me Myself and the Rain. A nice touch proving how rounded a player Tracy really is, a fact everyone we spoke to on the Strange Highways project alluded to.

So two questions remain, one; have all the Dio Disciples members lost his phone number? Two; does Tracy have the phone number of the girl on the front cover? Great player, great guy and finally a great album.

And as always Focus On Metal…Everything Else is Insignificant.

Joe Satriani at the Hampton Beach Casino on April 7th

There are 3 types of people that frequent these gigs, the first is someone like me who doesn't play guitar, the second is someone who plays and views something like this as a staring and concentration contest and the third and definitely the worst is the guy who plays and tells everyone within earshot that he plays too after adding alcohol. I've heard and unfortunately met some of these guys. Additionally now are the number of parents who had their young children with them which was something I hadn't really noticed before at Joe's shows. Then again if you have a 30 plus career in the music business then the stuff should trickle down to a younger audience. Especially if it's great.

Yet you can't view Joe's music as being huge on a commercial level. Yes he's been very successful as an instrumental guitarist and is widely regarded as one of the best in this field but he does have some crossover appeal because he has tried to push the boundaries of instrumental rock and has added lyrics too where needed. But the main reason is his ability to write memorable tunes that stay with you. Melody, technique and variation has kept me reaching for Joe's music again and again over the years.

Live I've seen him roughly 10 times in the last 20 years and the band he has now is probably the best, these guys played on his last album and it shows. There's a sense of fun and camradarie on stage that's infectious with the audience. The paycheck's a given but these guys love playing with one another. Mike Keneally on guitar and keyboards is the cool multi-instrumental uncle you wished you had, wool hat and Eddie Vedder approved flannel shirt a given. Marco Minnemann is a monster behind the kit, I've never seen the second part of a set open up with a drum solo and you really are an idiot if you are not back in your seat to witness it. Bryan Beller looks like a metalhead with the long hair but his playing offers so much more.

The band walk on stage a little before 8 and proceed to play for well over two hours. Starting with the title track Shockwave Supernova from his last album it's followed by my personal favorite Flying In A Blue Dream, that solo always gets me. Time from Crystal Planet was incredible and seems to be one of those deep album cuts that stays in the set. The band touch on many of Joe's past albums and Not Of This Earth from his debut was a great addition as was Friends from The Extremist. I wonder would he ever entertain playing at least one song from each album in the set similar to what Judas Priest did on the Epitath tour. As for some jamming there was plenty time for that too most notably on Ice 9 and Satch Boogie. An encore of Big Bad Moon and the inevitable closer Surfing With The Alien (Joe's Paranoid?) made sure the fans got their money's worth. The kids too who were all still awake with their ear plugs. As for the token audience bellower I play too guy, he became very quiet as the set wore on. Please go see this band.

Richie.

Review - "Battle Cry" Judas Priest (Epic 2016)

This one was actually on my list of metal DVDs to purchase and it was even on my Amazon wish list so it was nice when the DVD version of this showed up in the post courtesy of a very cool PR guy.
Having seen this tour live when they passed through town I was very much looking forward to revisiting a great concert experience albeit on a much larger scale. I was not disappointed.

First off the sound mixes on this are awesome. The 5:1 mix is truly ball rattling and the Dolby surround mix ups the ante even more. The one dig I'll give on the mix is that Rob's vocals are a bit buried. I mean you can hear them but damn it's the metal god those pipes should be front and center.
What was front and center was Richie Faulkner. This DVD really shows off how well this guy has fit in with the band and also the energy he brings live. This is exactly what we experienced when we saw them live as well. Richie is just having a blast and it's obvious that Glenn is more than happy to hang back a bit and let him shine.

The tracklist on this is flawless. The Priest always make sure to feature new stuff live and this tour didn't let up on that. The show recorded live at Wacken in August of 2015 features five tracks off of Redeemer of Souls. Add to that all the classics (ok not all of them this is Priest) and you have a killer ninety plus minutes of pure metal. They also throw in three bonus tracks from a show in Poland. So a total of twenty most excellent Priest performances.

There's a spot towards the end of the show where there's a teenage fan right at the rail and he's just bawling his eyes out. This kid is just overwhelmed with the emotions of seeing Priest live. That about sums up this DVD. We are really in a great time for metal DVDs and this is another great one. Just crank this up and be overwhelmed by the majesty that is Judas Priest. Considering that most of those guys are getting up there in years its amazing to watch BLAZE through Painkiller and still come back and finish with Living After Midnight.

Do yourself and your metal ear and eye holes a favor and get yourself a copy of "Battle Cry".

ANGERHEAD release free download of Motorhead - "Iron Fist" cover song.

ANGERHEAD, the San Jose, California up and coming raging band have released a free mp3 download of the classic Motorhead song "Iron Fist", which is off of their upcoming new EP "Fueled by Rage".

Angerhead guitarist Eric Beard has checked in with the following comment:
We decided to go back in with Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Testament) for the new EP. He worked with us on our 2nd EP “Headful Of Hate”. Juan is metal through and through. He has worked with a lot of Bay Area bands and friends so its a good fit for us.

The EP starts out with "So Cold". This is probably our most sludgy song and also the last song in our live set. Downtuned, full of twists and turns, It is a definitely crowd pleaser and is heavy as fk!

The second song is one of oldest song I’ve written, "Face The Fear". The song has been a staple with me for a long time. I've done it in a few different ways and with other projects. I've even done it with a jazz feel and the song still holds up!! haha. I really enjoy the Angerhead version of it.

The 3rd song is called "Legacy of Hate". This is the longest song we’ve ever written. It was one that came together fully as a band and one of the favorites of the new EP.

The 4th song is "Take Me As I Am" and its a barnburner, kicks your ass from start to finish.

The Last song on the EP is a cover of Motorhead’s "Iron Fist". Paul and I loved this song, even before Ace of Spades when we were growing up, so we decided it was right. We have been seeing a lot of bands doing Ace Of Spades and wanted to do something different. RIP Lemmy. A True Legend!!

Angerhead, who expertly combine razor sharp elements of Thrash, Metal, Punk and Hardcore music into their pummeling sound, has been a crossover sensation with music fans throughout the Bay Area. The band has played many high profile support slots to big named acts such as Soulfly, Suicidal Tendencies,Testament, DRI, Exodus, Death Angel, Kittie and Quiet Riot to name a few.

For the latest band news and show dates, visit the official Angerhead website and Facebook page:
