JUDAS PRIEST SET TO ROCK U.S. AND CANADA THIS FALL

Due to the overwhelming success of Judas Priest's 17th studio effort overall, 'Redeemer of Souls' (which became the highest-charting album of their career, when it debuted on the Billboard 200 charts at #6), the band has announced a fall tour, which will hit the U.S. and Canada, from October 16th through November 12th. Supporting Priest on the U.S. dates and the Halifax engagement will be one of modern metal's top bands, Mastodon.

'Redeemer of Souls' also went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed releases of the band's career, with Rolling Stone stating, "Above all, 'Redeemer' is proof that Priest can still call themselves metal's defenders of the faith," while Revolver Magazine offered further praise, "Thus rejuvenated and recharged, the Metal Gods have delivered their strongest record in over a decade."

Comprised of Rob Halford (vocals), Glenn Tipton (guitar), Richie Faulkner (guitar), Ian Hill (bass), and Scott Travis (drums), Judas Priest is responsible for some of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems ("Living After Midnight," "Breaking the Law," "You've Got Another Thing Coming," etc.) and albums ('British Steel,' 'Screaming for Vengeance,' 'Painkiller,' etc.).

Ever since the release of 'Redeemer of Souls,' Judas Priest has been taking their music all over the world. And they are not finished yet, with the announcement of these new dates!

NEW BOOK TELLS STORY OF ONE OF HEAVY METALS BEST YET MOST DIFFICULT DECADES

Since its inception in the late 1960's, heavy metal has experienced quite a few ups and downs in popularity. But there was one specific decade that sticks out as the most troubling - the 1990's. In what seemed like one fell swoop, a style of metal that had been popular for much of the 1980's was rendered obsolete, and in its place, was a much more real, raw, and unique approach - detected in several new metal-based "sub-genres." Add to it several changes in the music industry and media, and it appeared as if traditional metal may have met its expiration date…before several bands (and a certain traveling festival tour) helped put headbanging rock back on track.

Written by journalist/author Greg Prato, 'Survival of the Fittest: Heavy Metal in the 1990's' is the first book to focus entirely on this decade. Set in an oral history format, 'Survival' features over 80 interviews conducted exclusively for this book, including current or past members of Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Dream Theater, King's X, Extreme, Winger, Cinderella, Living Colour, Faith No More, Primus, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Stone Temple Pilots, Kyuss, Danzig, Clutch, Life of Agony, Biohazard, Type O Negative, Within Temptation, Cradle of Filth, Death, Coal Chamber, and System of a Down (among many others), as well as Eddie Trunk, Riki Rachtman, and Lonn Friend. Also featured is a foreword penned by Pantera bassist Rex Brown.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist, who has written for Rolling Stone and Guitar Player, and has authored such books as 'Iron Maiden: '80 '81,' 'The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion,' 'The Eric Carr Story,' and 'Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music.' 'Survival of the Fittest' is his 16th book overall.

Available as a paperback version [616 pages, $24.99], a Kindle download [$9.99], and a Nook download [$9.99], 'Survival of the Fittest' helps put the '90s and heavy metal all into perspective.

Just Posted, Tony Franklin on Part 4 of Focus on Metal's Little Mountain Sound Project

Episode 243 - Little Mountain Sound Part 4

This week we bring you the fourth installment in our Little Mountain Sound Studio series. Our guest this week is none other than bassist and all around cool guy, Tony Franklin. Tony has played with an impressive list of artists including Gary Hoey, Marty Freidman, Ripper Owens, Doug Aldrich, and Whitesnake. Did I mention the guy has also played with Jimmy Page in The Firm? Jimmy Freaking Page! Of course he was also a big part of Blue Murder with John Sykes and Carmine Appice. So yeah, I think this guy knows his way around a studio so he's a perfect guy to talk about his time at LMS. These days when he's not enjoying his Ninja blender Tony is playing with Rated X and Heart of Storm with Doug Aldrich.

Here's Tony and Blue Murder doing a classic track

Review of Kip Winger, The Claddagh Pub, Lawrence, MA 7/19/2015

When we did our career retrospective interview with Reb Beach (episode 223) he mentioned the depth and complexity of the Winger catalogue and that the majority of people had no clue it existed bar the hits. Being a huge fan of the band as well as Kip's solo material this was one show I couldn't wait to see and boy was I not disappointed. There's nowhere to hide for the artist when they do an acoustic show, the songs have to be there and the performer has to be able to pull them off live. The stories and between song banter with the crowd count for a lot too and there has to be some level of spontaneity. The artist who can cover all of this make you feel they are playing just for you in your living room and on Sunday night that's how I felt.

You could tell straight away that not only has Kip been doing these shows for a while but he has a ton of fun up there on stage. He talked and joked with members of the crowd for a couple of minutes before opening with Cross from his solo album Songs From The Ocean Floor. Requests were taken from the audience and after playing Runaway he said he couldn't believe he remembered the words. An audience member was even invited to sing Miles Away and he nailed it with Kip stepping away from the mike at the end to let the guy finish the song, he was that good.

Some of the deeper Winger cuts were dusted off including Under One Condition from In The Heart Of The Young, Spell I'm Under and Who's The One from Pull and Blue Suede Shoes from Winger IV. Ben Hans accompanied Kip on percussion for a couple of tunes including Deal With The Devil and a killer version of the instrumental solo track Free. The icing on the cake was the return of support act Stomping Melvin to back him up for rocking versions of Rat Race, Can't Get Enuff and Seventeen. Closing the near 20 song set with Van Halen's Ain't Talking Bout Love rounded off one of the best shows I have seen in a while. If he's playing in your area go see him.

Richie.

Old School Thrashers SONICK PLAGUE Streaming Tracks from Re-Recorded Debut Album

Old school thrashers SONICK PLAGUE are streaming two tracks from its re-recorded, self-titled debut, which will be reissued digitally on Pavement Music and on CD from the band on July 24. Stream album tracks "Street Wars" here and "One Swift Kick" here.

Pre-order the CD here or the CD/shirt combo at this location

Originally titled What's the Purpose, this updated version of the album was recorded at the legendary Carriage House Studios and captures the powerful energy and grit of the origins of thrash metal.

Sonick Plauge are veterans (and some say) pioneers of the classic, thrash metal sound. This raw and lively sound originated in the hills of West Virginia in 1984. The lineup was solidified in Connecticut a few years later with founders Ken Cuccaro (drums) and Tim Meehan (guitars), along with Tony Teodoro (guitars) and Sean Donnelly (bass, vox).
Things started moving for Plague when they landed their first show at the legendary Anthrax in Norwalk, CT. Owners Shaun and Brian Sheriden signed the metal quartet to their own label (Anthrax Records) and the debut album, What's the Purpose, was released in 1988. Immediately after the album's release, Tim Meehan retreated south and (after an exhaustive search) was replaced by childhood friend Chuck Crilly (guitars). The band embarked on a self-supported tour and played alongside the likes of Death Angel, Voivod, Gwar, Pantera, Ludichrist, Crumbsuckers and many more. The tour took its toll on the guys and after a couple unsuccessful lineup changes, the band dissolved.

In 2012 Sonick Plague lost their beloved friend and brother Tony Teodoro. The tragic and untimely passing found Ken, Sean and Chuck talking again and soon back to their old musical form.   Matt Dupre was recruited to round out the reformed band and a decision was made to re-record and release the debut album while they continue working on material for a follow up.

Australian Thrashers HARLOTT sign to Metal Blade!

Debut single/video, cover art, pre-orders live now! European tour with ANNIHILATOR confirmed!

Metal Blade Records is excited to announcing the signing of Australian thrash metal act, HARLOTT! Forged in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, HARLOTT are the finest example of the thrash metal genre in recent years. Taking their influence from the 80's Bay Area thrash scene, and blending it with the Teutonic melody and grit, they focus on high energy, up tempo music with lyrical influence from war, religion, chaos, and the human condition. Unrivaled live concerts, an aggressive recognizable sound, clinical musicianship, and a classic 'Aussie' sense of humour have earned HARLOTT a strong and dedicated fan base, which continues to grow day to day.

HARLOTT's debut release 'Origin' blew audiences away with its unrelenting speed, ferocious sound, and hook driven riffs, and did much to solidify HARLOTT as an up and coming force to be reckoned with. The four piece thrash outfit followed with a national tour, a string of Australian Heavy Metal Festival performances and a handful of support positions, including Germany's Accept and Megadeth's very own Dave Ellefson.

Their follow up release 'Proliferation' only proves that the band means business, and could not only match their own fury, but even surpass it.

Check out the 1st single 'Denature' at metalblade.com/harlott. White you're there, check out the pre-order section where you can order 'Proliferation' on CD, vinyl, or digitally!

The band comments: "Harlott are extremely excited to be signing on with METAL BLADE for the worldwide release of Proliferation. METAL BLADE have worked with some of the most important and influential Heavy Metal bands of all time, and we feel absolutely privileged to have the opportunity of engaging with such dedicated persons from a record company that has been so vital to the history of our music."

Fans across the world will now all have access to new albums on the same day! New music Fridays begin on Friday, July 10th with the first ever global music street date. Metal Blade Records offers up two huge releases to mark the unified global launch, with the new album from Between the Buried and Me, Coma Ecliptic, and the first ever DragonForce DVD/blu-ray, In the Line of Fire …Larger Than Live.

Between the Buried and Me's seventh full length album, Coma Ecliptic, boasts a series of emotive peaks and valleys that drive the narrative along with the lyrics. Singer Tommy Rogers shares: "Coma Ecliptic is a new life for BTBAM. Throughout the process we worked harder than we ever have and really pushed the BTBAM sound to a new identity. In a world of repetition, I'm very proud to be a part of something that is extremely rewarding, as well as frightening. When you don't push yourself you will never know what the outcome is. The outcome is Coma Ecliptic."

Coma Ecliptic was recorded in January and February of 2015 with longtime Between the Buried and Me producer Jamie King at Basement Recordings in North Carolina. Drums and piano were recorded with King and Kris Hilbert at the Fidelitorium. Final mixing and mastering was placed in the capable hands of Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Amon Amarth, Devin Townsend) at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden.
