Episode 283 - Hanging With Jarvis

Richie hit the road and came back with two chats. First up is a talk he had with Jordan Rudess before DreamTheater’s Boston show for “The Astonishing”. A few days later he spent some time before and after Night Demon’s Boston date on the Final Curse Tour talking with bassist/vocalist Jarvis Leatherby.

Night Demon, Great Scott bar, Allston, MA on 4/28/2016

Last years Curse Of The Damned album surprised the hell out of me. Here was a new band doing an old school metal album and actually pulling it off without it sounding modern or contrived. It really did feel like it was recorded in the U.K in 1980. I couldn't wait to hear some of it live and it did not disappoint.

Coming on stage just before midnight the band played the whole album in reverse order. It sounded amazing. Great old school no frills metal, perfect for the venue. New guitarist Armand John Anthony fits right in. Being so close to the stage you can tell that even though it's their livelihood the band love the music, drummer Dusty Squires often singing along to the songs, singer and bass player Jarvis Leatherby constantly on the move. Highlights and there were many included Heavy Metal Heat, Satan and the album's title track.

A well deserved encore of The Chalice from their earlier ep featured an appearance from their Mascot Rocky, think early Eddie with Maiden. Earlier I had spoken to Jarvis about what the future held for the band, he told me the new album is done and they have a 5 year plan. After seeing this I'm all in. Go see them.

Richie.

Frost & Fire Festival Set To Bring America's Finest Traditional Heavy Metal Bands To Ventura

There is no denying that Europe has been the heavy metal hotbed on this planet for several decades, particularly when it comes to the traditional forms of the musical style: clean vocals, soaring guitar harmonies, and galloping rhythms. Even though America has proven time and again that it can produce world-class bands in the old-school metal realm and that it has the die-hard fans to support the genre, occurrences of all-out traditional heavy metal festivals have been few and far between, if any. But metalheads can now rejoice, as the beach town of Ventura, California is set to host a festival exactly of this nature on October 17, 2015 at Bombay Bar & Grill, featuring a hefty lineup of scintillating talent from all over America.

The festival will be headlined by Wichita, Kansas veterans, Manilla Road, who shall satiate their legion of followers with a sizable set of selections from their revered catalog. As direct support is a rare, special concert appearance by Tucson, Arizona metal cult heroes, Ashbury, performing their seminal record 'Endless Skies' in its entirety. Hometown mainstays, Night Demon, slot in third on this epic bill, summoning the Southern California faithful to get down to the ritual of drinking from their NWOBHM chalice and bask in the old-school righteousness of tunes from their Century Media debut full-length release 'Curse Of The Damned' as well as their self-titled EP. Metal Blade recording artists, Visigoth, from Salt Lake City, Utah, will set foot to reconquer these lands once again with musical tales of battle, and female-fronted Louisville, Kentucky-based Savage Master will cast a spell with their occult-themed metal sorcery.

Rounding out the 10-band lineup is BAT (Richmond, VA) featuring Ryan Waste of Municipal Waste, Los Angeles-based Metal Blade Records alumni Steel Prophet with guest vocalist Neil Turbin, Ventura's fantasy-themed rock 'n' roll quartet Gygax, Blade Killer (Los Angeles), Helion Prime (Sacramento, CA) and Wolfcross (Los Angeles, CA). As if this already isn't reason enough for old-school metalheads to attend, Tim Baker and Robert Garven, members of the mighty, ever-elusive Cirith Ungol, will be doing a meet-n-greet session. To say that this is a must-attend for fans of the genre would be the understatement of the year, and the event is not only expected to draw locals, but is also poised to welcome travelers from all corners of the country and beyond.

To purchase tickets and for more information, visit http://www.frostandfirefest.com.

For out of town guests, we have secured a discount rate at the Clocktower Inn (three blocks from the venue).  Just mention the name "Frost and Fire" upon booking to receive a reduced rate for your hotel stay the weekend of the festival.

Night Demon are the featured guest on this week Focus on Metal

Episode 221 - Night Demon

Century Media artist Night Demon have just released a killer old school NWOBHM influenced disc entitled "Curse of The Damned". Richie was so psyched about the release that he went on a mission to get someone from the band on the show. The result is this weeks talk with bassist/vocalist Jarvis Leatherby. It's pretty apparent these guys live and breathe classic metal. We also engage in a quick discussion about the current state of AC/DC and give some thoughts about their latest release "In Rock We Trust".

Track of the week is another great one from our friends at Massacre Records. This week we feature a track off "The Judgement" the first release in thirteen years from German metal machine Scanner.

RAVEN Reveals "ExtermiNation" Album Cover

NWOBHM thrash godfathers RAVEN have unveiled the cover to their upcoming studio album "ExtermiNation".  The cover was designed by Jay Sharpe and can be seen above.

Raven is currently running a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to help fund the recording of "ExtermiNation".  The band is offering Kickstarter backers a full-length cover album entitled "Party Killers".  "Party Killers" is available exclusively through the Kickstarter campaign, and will not be available after the campaign ends on November 28th.  "Party Killers" is available on CD and 12" vinyl.  Other Kickstarter-exclusive items including t-shirts, CDs, a 7" vinyl single, patches, stickers, and more.

"Party Killers" track-listing:

- "Too Bad Too Sad" (Nazareth)
- "Bad Reputation" (Thin Lizzy)
- "Cockroach" (Sweet)
- "Fireball" (Deep Purple)
- "Hang on to Yourself" (David Bowie)
- "He's a Whore" (Cheap Trick)
- "In For the Kill" (Budgie)
- "Is There a Better Way" (Status Quo)
- "Ogre Battle" (Queen)
- "Queen of My Dreams" (Edgar Winter)
- "Tak Me Bak Ome" (Slade)

Vocalist and bassist John Gallagher comments on the album: "We were writing for the new album at a cool studio in Richmond, VA, and in the middle of jamming asked the engineer there if we could record a few cover tunes just for the hell of it.  The sounds were so good we decided to do something we'd been threatening for many years: "Party Killers" - a collection of cover tunes guaranteed to deafen yer neighbors!! It's basically a peek into the little red 45rpm singles box we used to have at home...songs and bands that were very influential to us as kids, but given the Raven overhaul! I think it gives a nice insight to our roots and will be an excellent companion to the new album!"

RAVEN is currently wrapping up an extensive US tour with support act NIGHT DEMON.

RAVEN “North American Extermination Tour 2014?:
Nov 24th - Richmond, VA - Strange Matter
Nov 25th - Raleigh, NC - The Maywood

NIGHT DEMON Announce Live Dates and Prepare to Enter Studio

Having recently released their self-titled debut EP via Shadow Kingdom
Records, Oxnard California NWOBHM-inspired upstarts NIGHT DEMON
have announced a series of one-off shows in support of the EP. At the end
of September, the band will enter the studio to commence work on the
full-length follow up to their four-song debut. The full-length will be
released on a yet-to-be-determined label.

NIGHT  DEMON Live Dates:

09/14 @ Bombay - Ventura, CA (Record Release Show!)
10/16 @ Malone's - Santa Ana, CA w/ Diamond Head & Raven
10/17 @ The Vex Arts - Los Angeles, CA w/ Diamond Head & Raven
10/20 @ The Count's Vamp'd - Las Vegas,  NV w/ Diamond Head & Raven
10/25 @ The Creekside - Santa Barbara, CA

This California trio, featuring members of THE FUCKING WRATH, first started
making noise in 2011. It didn't take long for the band to make a name for
themselves with trad-metal maniacs from across the globe. In fact, shortly
after establishing an online presence via Bandcamp, the organizers of
Germany's Keep It True Festival offered NIGHT DEMON a place on
the fest's 2014 line-up. British metallic stylings reminiscent of
Angel Witch, Raven and Iron Maiden are kicked into overdrive with an
edgier and gritter dose of American venom.
Consider NIGHT DEMON mandatory listening for any NWOBHM fan.
The Shadow Kingdom Records CD release is remastered from the digital
version and offers an undeniably superior sound.

A video for the song "Night Demon," filmed, directed and produced by the band,
is now playing at this location

The band's self-titled EP was made available on August 6th and can be

"...raw, ass kicking metal." - Sounds From the Mead Hall

"The call to join Night Demon's ritual should be heeded by all those who
can trace their metal roots back to the Eighties, or anyone who appreciates
metal from the days when the only available prefix was heavy."

"Look out for this band; they have something special..."
